Gabriel Faure / Maurice Durufle – Requiems

[WV, CUE, LOG, COVERS]

Performers:

Miah Persson, soprano
Malena Ernman, mezzo-soprano
Olle Persson, baritone
Ola Hakansson, cello
Mattias Wager, organ

Swedish Radio Choir
Fredrik Malmberg – conductor

BIS presents Requiems from Gabriel Faure and Maurice Durufle, two composers who wanted to express something different from other musical settings of the Mass for the Dead, something which Faure himself described as a ‘trust in eternal rest’. On this disc, the choir, directed by Fredrik Malmberg, is joined by three of Sweden’s foremost singers as well as organist Mattias Wager, who has also supplied the organ arrangement of Faure’s orchestral score.
There are so many recordings of the Requiems by Maurice Durufle and Gabriel Faure that seeing a new recording released seems excessive. But the reason this recording of these quietly spiritual works deserves attention is that it obeys the composers’ wishes for performances in the churches, without orchestra, and with only organ accompaniment for the chorus and soloists. The sound is different but to this listener (and with the forces assembled for this recording) the result is well worth the effort.
Fredrick Malmberg conducts the Swedish Radio Choir (Sveriges Radiokor), organist Mattias Wager, and soloists Malena Ernman, Olle Persson, Ola Hakansson, and Miah Persson in beautifully crafted, exquisitely sung and sensitively rendered devotional moods. The soloists are all outstanding, especially the women, and there are few performances of the Faure ‘Pie Jesu’ that can match the ethereal beauty of Miah Persson’s hauntingly beautiful rendering. The balance between the organ, the chorus and the soloists is perfect and the engineer who created this CD deserve awards for the quality of sound: the presence of hearing the works in a cathedral is captured as well as any recording on the market! Highly Recommended on every level.

Ludwig van Beethoven – Missa Solemnis, Op.123

[APE, CUE, LOG, COVERS, BOOKLET]

Performers: Charlotte Margiono, Catherine Robbin, Monteverdi Choir, William Kendall, Alastair Miles
Orchestra: English Baroque Soloists
Conductor: John Eliot Gardiner
Label: Archiv

John Eliot Gardiner’s interpretation of the Missa Solemnis stands as one of the crowning accomplishments of his career and one of the most impressive achievements of the period-instrument movement. The concept is grand and powerful, lively though not unduly brisk. The execution is simply electrifying: Gardiner has the orchestra on the edge of their seats, the chorus going all-out, and sparks flying everywhere. Excellent singing from the soloists and a vivid recording complete the triumph, and it’s all on a single disc. –Ted Libbey

4. Mass in D, Op.123 “Missa Solemnis” – Sanctus

Johannes Brahms – Ein deutsches Requiem

[APE, CUE, LOG, COVERS, BOOKLET]

Performer: Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau

Orchestra: Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus

Conductor: Otto Klemperer

This account of the German Requiem really is one of the great recordings of the century. Even today, Otto Klemperer’s monumental interpretation with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus, recorded in 1961, remains unmatched among readings that emphasize the spirituality of the score. Sober and sustained, but not unduly slow, it places Brahms on the continuum of German sacred music going back through Beethoven to Handel, Bach, and Schütz. Drawing committed playing and singing from his forces, Klemperer opens the door to the beauties of the music without fuss or fanfare. Both soloists are exemplary: Schwarzkopf’s expressive portamento now sounds a bit dated in style, but her singing is characterful, while Fischer-Dieskau is a paragon of restrained expressiveness. The singing of the Philharmonia Chorus is especially beautiful. EMI has done a superior job of remastering the original recording. Balances and tone quality are quite fine, and the spacious Kingsway Hall ambience conveys with lifelike immediacy. Compared with previous CD incarnations, there is new depth to the image and better resolution of detail–the weight of the organ can really be felt, as can the timpani strokes in “Denn alles fleisch es ist wie gras,” and one finds greater presence and definition in the chorus and considerably more richness of tone in the orchestra. There is still some distortion in the climactic moments; for example, what sounds like tape saturation frizzes a couple of the big Beethovenian choral proclamations at the end of “Denn alles fleisch es ist wie gras.” Such things are but a small blemish on what is an absolutely ravishing restoration of one of the most valuable recordings of the stereo era. –Ted Libbey

Tracklist:

George Enescu – Symphony No. 3, Romanian Rhapsody No. 1

[FLAC, CUE, LOG, COVERS, BOOKLET]

Performer: BBC Philharmonic Orchestra

Conductor: Gennady Rozhdestvensky

Year: 1998

Label: Chandos

“…Written during the unsettled years of the First World War, this nearly-hour-long, three-movement work is anchored in a malign, hallucinatory scherzo, which is bordered by a sometimes brooding, sometimes eruptive first movement and a textless choral finale…The sound is outstanding…soaking us in the lavish colors, but also capturing the all-important subterranean tremors with the requisite subtlety. Urgently recommended.” -Rabinowitz, Fanfare

Symphony No. 3 in C major, Op. 21
I. Moderato, un poco maestoso
II. Vivace, ma non troppo
